Will my cutout sugar cookies expand to far?

im making cutout sugar cookies for my friends bday. its currently setting in the fridge (3 hours haha) and since i don't have cutouts is it okay if i shape them with my hands? im OCD so they won't be crappy haha. but if i do, will the expand too far to where it won't look like the shape (e.g. hearts, stars, etc)?
